Basic concepts and terminology of LED display screen | Part-1

Indoor SMD Screen

The city now has a large number of high-rise structures due to the ongoing growth of the market economy, and transparent SMD Screen, LED displays are being utilized extensively in areas like landscape illumination and architectural art enhancement for urban glass curtain walls. A lot of clients have never heard of a transparent Mustang LED display before. So here we are discussing our LED products. This is part 1 of our article, in which the Mustang LED author describes the basic concept and terminology of our LED products.

Outdoor SMD Screen

1: What is LED?

The full form of LED is LIGHT EMITTING DIODE. The “LED” in the display industry specifically refers to LEDs that can emit visible light bands; its interior is mainly a PN junction. When electrons and holes in the PN junction recombine, the electrons transition from a high energy level to a low energy level, and the electrons release excess energy in the form of emitted photons (electromagnetic waves), resulting in electroluminescence. The color of the glow is related to the material elements that make up its base.

Material: GaAs (gallium arsenide) red light, GaP (gallium phosphide) green light, GaN (gallium nitride) blue

Visible light wavelength range: 380nm~770nm.

Below 380nm is often called ultraviolet, and above 770nm is often called infrared.

Red standard wavelength: 625nm

Green standard wavelength: 525nm

Blue standard wavelength: 470nm

2: What is a pixel?

The minimum luminous pixel of an LED display has the same meaning as the “pixel” in an ordinary computer monitor;

3: What is the pixel pitch (dot pitch)?

Point pitch (pixel pitch) – the distance between adjacent pixels, common point pitch

Indoors: 4, 4.75, 5, 6, and 7.62, 8, 10

Outdoor: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25, and 31.25

4: What is point density?

Number of pixels per square meter Point density = (1000/point spacing) 2, such as PH16 point density = (1000/16) 2 = 6944 points/square meter

5: What is DIP?

DIP is the abbreviation of Double In-line Package. Dual in-line assembly, outdoor LED lights use this packaging method;

6: What is SMT? What is SMD?

SMT is surface mounting technology (abbreviation of Surface Mounted Technology), which is currently the most popular in the electronic assembly industry technology and process. In SMD Screen, SMD is the English abbreviation of the Surface mounted device (SURFACE MOUNTED DEVICE).

7: What is an LED display module?

It is a basic unit determined by the circuit and installation structure, has a display function, and can realize the display function through simple assembly;

8: What is a plug-in lamp module? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

It means that the DIP packaged lamp passes the lamp pin through the PCB board, and fills the lamp hole with tin through welding. The module made by this process is a plug-in lamp module; the advantages are large viewing angle, high brightness, and good heat dissipation. ; The disadvantage is the low pixel density;

9: What is a surface mount module? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Surface mount is also called SMT. The SMT packaged lamp is welded to the surface of the PCB board through a welding process. The module made by this process is called a surface mount module. Advantage: good display effect, with high pixel density, suitable for indoor viewing.

10: What is a sub-surface mount module? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

The sub-surface mount is a product between DIP and SMT. The packaging surface of its LED lamp is the same as that of SMT, but its positive and negative pins are the same as those of DIP. They are also welded through the PCB during production. The advantages are: high brightness, good display effect, and good heat dissipation; the disadvantages are: complex process and difficult maintenance;

11: What is 3-in-1? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

It refers to encapsulating LED chips of three different colors of R, G, and B in the same colloid; the advantages are: that the chips are arranged in a circular shape, have good color mixing, and have a good display effect; the disadvantages are: light and color separation is difficult and the cost is high. Poor heat dissipation;

12: What is 3 and 1? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

3-in-1 refers to vertically juxtaposing R, G, and B independently packaged SMT lamps at a certain distance, with large viewing angle, high brightness, and good heat dissipation;

13: What is a dual-color, pseudo-color, or full-color display?

Different displays can be formed by using light-emitting diodes of different colors. The dual primary color is composed of red, green, or yellow-green, the pseudo-color is composed of three different colors: red, yellow-green, and blue, and the full color is composed of red. , pure green, and pure blue three different colors;

14: What is luminous brightness?

The light intensity emitted by the SMD Screen LED display unit area, the unit is cd/㎡, which is simply the light intensity emitted by one square meter of the display screen;

15: What is the brightness level?

The level of manual or automatic adjustment of the entire screen brightness between the lowest and the highest brightness;

16: What is a gray scale?

Under the same brightness level, the technical processing level of the display screen from the darkest to the brightest;

17: What is the maximum brightness?

Under a certain ambient illumination, the primary color of the LED display of SMD Screen is at maximum brightness and maximum gray level;

18: What is PCB?

PCB is (abbreviation of Printed Circuit Board) printed circuit board;

Indoor SMD Screen

19: What is BOM?

BOM is (abbreviation of Bill of material) bill of materials;

20: What is white balance? What is white balance adjustment?

What we call white balance refers to the balance of white, that is, the balance of the brightness ratios of the three colors R, G, and B; the adjustment of the brightness ratios and white coordinates of the three colors R, G, and B is called white balance adjustment. ;

21: What is color temperature?

When the color of light emitted by a light source is the same as the color of light radiated by a black body at a certain temperature.

22: What is frame changing frequency?

The number of times the display screen information is updated per unit time;

23: What is the refresh frequency?

Displays the number of times the image is repeatedly displayed on the display screen;

24: What is the viewing angle? What is the viewing angle? What is the best viewing angle?

The viewing angle is the angle between the two viewing directions on the same plane and the normal direction when the brightness in the viewing direction drops to 1/2 for in normal direction of the SMD Screen, LED display. So it will divided into vertical and horizontal viewing angles. ;

The visible viewing angle is the direction, in which the image content on the display screen can just be seen. And the angle formed by the normal line of the display screen.

The direction in which the content on the display screen can be seen completely is the best viewing angle. There is no color cast and the angle between the clearest direction of the image content and the normal.

25: What is color mixing distance? What is the minimum viewing distance? What is the optimal viewing distance?

Color mixing distance: The distance between RGB and RGB colors into a single color. The distance between dots × 0.5 (meters).

The minimum viewing distance refers to the distance. At which the content on the display can be seen completely. And a smooth image is displayed without a color cast. × 1 (meters). )

The optimal viewing distance is the distance between points at which viewers can see highly clear images × 3 (meters).
